Held every two years, the most recent EHF Women’s European Handball Championship took place in 2020. Norway was victorious in 2020. The win marked the country’s eighth overall title. The Norway club is favored to repeat in 2022. Norway topped France 22-20 in the final. Croatia finished in the third spot in 2022, beating Denmark 25-19.
This year’s tournament starts with 16 teams (four groups of four teams). That number is reduced to six teams during the second Group portion of the tournament. From there, the top teams will determine the champion.

2022 EHF Women’s European Handball Championship Picks
Norway favorite to win the EHF World Championship
Norway is the most dominant team in European Women’s Handball. The country has won the European title eight times dating back to 1998. Since 2004, Norway has won all but two titles, 2012 (Montenegro) and 2018 (France). In addition to eight titles, Norway has three silver medals and one bronze. With 12 medals, Norway is the only country with more than five medals in women’s competition. Denmark and France, who both have five total medals, are Norway’s closest rivals in medal count.
The reigning champs, Norway finished with a bronze medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Norway is also the reigning world champion in women’s handball, beating France 29-22.
France Brings the Momentum
France might only have one gold, one silver and three bronze medals in the European Handball Championship, but the team is on the rise. France finished in third in the European Handball Championship in 2016, won the title in 2018 and was runner-up to Norway in 2020. The French team won gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and defeated Norway in the 2021 World Championship.
If there is a team other than Norway who has a huge amount of momentum heading into the 2022 European Championship it is France.
Denmark is the Dark Horse
Denmark is the second winningest team in European Women’s Handball. They have won three gold medals, but the team’s most recent victory came in 2002. The club placed fourth in 2020, losing to Croatia 25-19. Denmark finished in third place during the 2021 World Championship. Denmark might not have the momentum of Norway or France, but they could be a dark horse to creep into the finals and win the 2022 Championship.
It’s hard to bet against Norway in 2022. The team has dominated women’s handball for a long while and a lot of that has to do with the play of Nora Mørk, who has been with the Norway team since 2010. During that time, she has won four gold medals in the European Championship as well as leading the tournament in scoring in 2016 (53 goals) and 2020 (52 goals).
Pick: Norway to win the 2022 EHF Women’s European Championship.
